These beautiful Custom made dodecahedron speaker balls are built by hand by Ben Houston. The dodecahedron, a twelve sided platanic solid utilized as a speaker body delivers a evan and unique sound. I first got interested in building these after reading Victor Papanak's book Design for the real world, Lots of very unique socio-econmocal based design for the 3rd world. While these speakers are relatively low tech compared to Bose or other High end audio they produce quite a nice sound that fills the room and is pretty seamless in its volume whether you are very close or in the corner. I have done some reseach and found that these type of speakers are also used for aucustical reseach like for audio specific architecure like opera halls.
Each speakerball features 12, 2 inch multi-media speakers wired in a series to a 1/4 out. Only a small amp is needed to power these units to a pretty good volume. I have been using a little computer sound system to drive them. These units work well in combination with a bass box or other bass unit. Obviously with such small speakers the bass is not boomin. I have done some sound installations using these and "bass shakers" bass transducers for a very nice effect. I have three color choices green, blue and white. Each speakerball is priced at $250.00 or a pair for 400.00.
